Christmas Clinic 2005 at Saturn Club (Dec 30, 2005)

Once again, the Drury sisters (Lauralynn and Julia), home for the holidays from Penn and Dartmouth, gave a great clinic to the Buffalo squash community at the Saturn Club. About 20 juniors attended, participated and watched two of the finest women soft-ball players ever to come out of the US.

Buffalo T&S Silver Juniors

Once again, Bart Chambers conducted a great tournament for juniors ( up to U19) over the weekend of Jan 19-21, 2007.

Hosted by the T&S and played at the T&S and Nichols, this Silver Event had great squash, nervous parents and kids galore! Whether playing in the lower ranks or in the top flight of BU19, there were many close, exciting matches in both the girls and boys divisions.

Over 70 juniors participated, about 45 from WNY, attesting to the great coaching we have in WNY.

In the BU11 John Bassett defeated Joe Smrcka in a very spirited match, 3-2. Sid Guterman (T&S) was 2nd in the BU13 round robin while Oscar Ostendorf (T&S) was 3rd.

In the girls divisions. Catherine Williams (T&S) won the GU13 round robin. In the GU15 Elizabeth Bassett (T&S) lost a tight match to Saskia Ponwal-Gray (Ct). In one of the best matches witnessed by this writer ,Laura Caty (Amherst H.S.and T&S) beat Julia Fisher (of City Honors H.S. and T&S), 3-1.

The top match of the day in this writer’s opinion, was in the BU19, between Alex Greaves-Tunnell of Rochester and David Edwards of Shadyside Academy, Pgh. Alex eeked out a 3-2 victory.

Many thanks to all who helped with the tournament and to the T&S Club and Nichols  school for hosting the matches.

Following are some pictures from the2007 event.

CITY JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

City Juniors-Feb 3, 2007

The first annual City Juniors championship was won by Peter Lynn (boys) and Julia Fisher (girls).

In the boys division, Peter defeated top seeded Adam Toenjes of Nichols 3-1. In the girls division, played entirely at Nichols, Julia defeated Emma Rosen in the final, 3-0.

Thirty eight juniors entered the tournament which was hampered by bad weather and had its final moved up to 4pm on Saturday at Nichols (instead of Sunday, as previously announced).

Kudos to the winners and to all who played. Many thanks to Sally Russell and to Mary Pici for running the tournament and to the Saturn Club and Nichols, for allowing the use of their courts.

BSRA Junior

Rankings and Challenge Ladder Rules:

BSRA Junior Ranking Ladder will be published on the BSRA Web Page at www.buffalosquash.org.

An individual who is new to the ladder can challenge one player of his choice to be placed on the ladder. If the player loses this match he must start at the bottom of the ladder to work his way up the ladder. If he wins, he takes the spot above the person he challenged.

Matches will be played with the ball designated for use in the league in which the Junior plays.

If a match has been played that changes the ranking, the Junior player’s Coach can email Mary Sellers-Pici (mary.pici@adelphia.net) with the date of the match, players names and the match results. Mary will then make the changes to the Junior ladder. Approximately once per month, Mary will email Ed Jocoy an updated ladder and he will update the Web Page.

All matches (league, tournament, etc.) count as challenge matches. The ladder will not be updated unless you email the change to Mary Sellers-Pici.

You can challenge any Junior player provided that they are not more than 3 positions higher than you on the Junior ladder. For other than league and tournaments, both players must agree in advance that it is a "challenge match".

The matches are won by the first player to win 3 games (3 out of 5 games).

If the challenger is successful, he will take the position above the person challenged and all other players move down accordingly. If he is not successful, the challenger will retain his current position.

You do not have to accept more than one challenge match per week. Once challenged, you must play the match within 10 days.

Any questions or disputes regarding the Junior Ladder should be referred to Mary Sellers-Pici for resolution.

Coaches should encourage Juniors to play as many challenge matches as they can.
