The 51st Tennis & Squash Club Invitational Doubles Tourney T&S Invitational Doubles Tournament DEC 8-10, 2006 Over the weekend of Dec 8-10, 32 teams competed in 4 divisions in the 51st T&S Doubles Tournament. In the Open/40+ division,Mike McGorry and partner Mike Costigan won over Peter DeRose and Alan Hunt. Perhaps the most exciting match was a one point loss in the 5th game by our own Bart Chambers and Tom Hayes to one time touring pros Scott Denne and partner Ray Lindsay. Sat night saw everyone enjoy a dinner dance at the Garrett Club. A good time was had by all. Many thanks to Mike McGorry and Bart Chambers for organizing and running the tournament. While we await pictures from the 2006 event (2006), lets look at some pics from the 50th (2005):
Knox Cup Jan 27-29, 2006, Buffalo Note: The 2007 Knox Cup, to be hosted by Cleveland, has been postponed from Jan 2007 until Fall 2007. The KNOX CUP-2006 The annual Knox Cup tournament between Buffalo, Cleveland and Pittsburgh took place on the weekend of Jan 28, 2006. For 26 years this tournament, initiated by Seymour H. Knox III, has brought together good friends from these 3 cities for a weekend of competition and fellowship. After some introductory team mingling and evening doubles on Friday night, serious competition got underway on Saturday and continued through Sunday The match format remained the same as in recent years- On the men’s side: 10 men’s singles including one veteran (40+) and one senior’s match (50+), and 5 men’s doubles including one team with a combined age of 100+ years. On the women’s side there were 3 women’s singles one women’s doubles. And finally there was one mixed doubles match. This year, despite some very strong competition, Buffalo prevailed with 36 points to 23 for Cleveland and 22 for Pittsburgh. The Championship remained in doubt until Sunday morning when Peter Linder and Bart Chambers clinched the victory with a 3-1 win over Pittsburgh in men’s doubles. One of the most exciting and hard-hitting men’s doubles matches occurred between the #1 doubles teams of Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh’s Foster and Lynch won over Anderson and DeRose, 3-2. The traditional dinner dance was held at the Buffalo Club where match play was forgotten and old friendships were renewed and new friends were made. Many thanks to co-chairmen Nelson Montgomery and Paul Dambmann for their hard work in organizing the event and to the Buffalo Club and the Tennis and Squash Club for hosting the matches, dinner and brunch.
Power-White Exhibition Mar 5, 2006 (no exhibition scheduled for the 2006-07 season) Exhibition, Mar 5, 2006 For the third year in a row, under the guidance of chairman Paul Dambmann and his organizing team, the BSRA sponsored an exhibition between two of the world’s greatest squash players: Jonathon Power and John White. The event consisted of a best-of-three match followed by a juniors clinic and then a best-of-five exhibition match and was hosted at the Saturn Club on Sunday, March 5, 2006. Using modified North American scoring (to contain the length of the matches). the second exhibition match was won by Power 7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-5, and 11-10. Incidently ,Jonathon Power, with 36 PSA Tour Titles, announced his retirement from competitive squash after the match. While the competitors used every shot in the book, from this writer’s perspective the "bread and butter" shots were straight ,tight-to-the-wall, drops, generally to the right front corner, hit quickly off of a volley before the opponent could recover. Both players exhibited fantastic speed, agility and getting ability. Once again, it was great to see how the game is played at the highest level! Thanks to all who helped make this event a great success-and many thanks to the Saturn Club for hosting this event. Also, a standing ovation for the event’s sponsors.
Note: No Exhibition scheduled for 2007
St.Patrick's Day Tournament-Mar 12, 2005 (Note: No Tournament in 2006)
SHAMROCK TOURNAMENT March 12, 2005 The annual St. Pats Day (aka Shamrock) tournament was held on Saturday March 12 at the Buffalo Club, Saturn Club and T&S (singles). The doubles were played at the T&S. Over 45 players competed in what has become one of the most enjoyable and anticipated tournaments in the array of BSRA events. A total of 32 players competed in the singles- 16 in the A/B draw and 16 in the C/D draw. In the A/B, the appropriately named Galway team consisting of Bill Cleary, Allen Tompkins, Zee Shaan Qureshi, and D. J. Brinkworth won with 22 points followed by Limerick and Waterford with 19 points each. Dublin rounded out the A/B round robin with 12 points. In the C/D round robin, Kilarney won with 27 points followed by Kilkenny (22), Cork (20) and Tipperary (3) The doubles component had 16 players. In the finals John Hurley and Hugh McLean defeated Leon Smith and Dan Roblin with the consolation going to the team of Nelson Montgomery/Bill Pearce over Bill Koessler/Dan Drury. Dinner and cocktails at the BC rathskeller followed the afternoon of competition. Many thanks to Bill and John Cleary and Nelson Montgomery for organizing the tournament and to the clubs for hosting the events.
2007 Shamrock Shamrock Tournament 2007 The Buffalo Club’s Shamrock squash tournament has grown into one of this area’s finest events! Very well run by a team headed by the Cleary Brothers, this year the tournament boasted four teams of 5 players and four teams of 4 players each for a total of 36 competitors. And that’s just the singles! The Doubles competition, hosted at the T&S and won by Dave Franko and partner Peter Lynn ,boasted 16 players and was run by Nelson Montgomery. The five-person teams boasted names like "GALWAY, LIMERICK, WATERFORD, and TIPPERARY, (winner TBD, while the four-person teams (Killarny, Kilkenny, Cork, and Dublin was won by TBD. The quality of squash was outstanding! This writer witnessed John Scannell of the Limerick team, defeat Kingman Bassett (in a repeat of the B final on Mar 3) and Dennis Brinkworth in hard hitting, hard fought matches at the T&S venue. Then it was on to the BC where this writer had the pleasure of watching Mark Collard and then one of the greatest squashers Buffalo has ever had, Gordon Anderson! At over 50 years of age, GDHA is truly an inspiration-win or lose! He boasts the best (bar none) "hold and hit" stroke of all. The best player witnessed by this writer was without question Scott Winokur. In his match against up-and-coming Zee Shan Qureshi, Scott demonstrated raw speed , lighting reflexes, and great knowledge of the game as he repeatedly attacked returns and great gets thrown up by Qureshi.(Winokur’s moves reminded one of City Champion Craig Rappaport ,also from the BC but not competing) Some pictures from the 2007 event follow.
